In Boxing they say that the hardest punch is not the one you see, but the one you don’t see. If you are on guard against a punch and see it coming the chances of it knocking you down are not very high. Yet the punch you don’t see coming will knock you down. The Bible talks about this quite a bit and in the verse,
(KJV 1st Cor. 10:12) "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall." That is when you are convinced you can’t fall is many times when you do. The reason is you are not prepared against the devices of the enemy. It’s like the alcohaulic who goes into a bar just to watch a football game and he ends up drinking till he gets drunk.
Or the man with lust issues who is married and yet goes to the strip club because he doesn’t think it is cheating; but gets captured by lust. I could go on with the analogys, but the point is relatively simple. Do you think you are strong and wouldn’t fall for “that” sin whatever that is for you. Concider your weakness lest you fall. We all have sinfull tendancys no matter how much we don’t think that we do. As soon as you say, “I can’t fall,” you may. Rather to stay sober minded aware of our propensity to sin and then when temptation comes you will be able to see it coming and resist.
For instance if you have a drug addiction and are sober for say one month, don’t go back hanging around your old friends thinking you won’t give in. Remember what causes us to fall is often the punch we don’t see coming. If you keep your eyes open to areas you know you have weakness you will be able to resist them.
Of course sometimes you do see the punch coming and it still knocks you down. The answer here is not an easy one, but you need to be willing to suffer to resist that sin. If we are wise we will be aware of the things that can cause us to fall. For instance I bought a new long skateboard and figured I wouldn’t fall because I have ridden skateboards most of my life. Yet this long board was much less stable than my regular board and also I had never ridden a long board before. Well first time I rode it I went at full speed and I didn’t even have pads on. Why you may ask? Well because I never fell on the other board, at least not for several years. I figured there was little chance I would fall this time. Well I did fall and I broke my arm clear through. The lesson I learned was to concider yourself Lest You Fall.
